My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night;

but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends - it gives a lovely light.

Edna St Vincent Millay

Conceived from Maurice Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and the poems that inspired it, this show is a journey of music and text through the night as a space of subjectivity and transfiguration.

An intimate experience that establishes a dialogue between music and words, Suddenly the Night is also a visual exchange between instrument and actor.

The journey begins with a transition from the triviality of the social evening and the lounge pianist to the darkness of the anonymity in the city, with such contrasting composers as Poulenc and Ligeti and a monologue that guides us through the different moods of the night. The second part delves into the romantic sensitivity of Schumann, Wieck and Grieg, whose works are articulated with letters and poems that bring both performers together in their longings and needs. With Sibelius, the night gives way to fantasy and finally takes us to the last part of our journey: Ravel and the three poems by Bertrand that inspired his lunatic and great piano work.

REVIEWS

Suddenly the Night offered us moments of relaxation and recollection, of introspection and self-assurance. It was a very valuable take on the confluence of acting and classical music in a show that is out of the norm.

Milly Vazquez

If this show is presented as a space of subjectivity and transfiguration, as the program says, it is not excessive to affirm that the audience, the artists and the musical experience itself come out of it transformed by the power of intelligence and creativity.

Daniel Varacalli Costas

Was it a concert? Not in the sense in which we usually understand it, but in what refers to the original meaning of the term “agreement”. Was it a play? Yes and not only… I am glad that we can still find experiences that don't have a name (yet) and that, like music, beyond words, lead us to contemplate.

Claudia Guzman

Due to the choice of works and the journey they propose, but mainly due to the great interpretation, of undeniable virtuosity and sensitivity, Suddenly the Night is an invitation that will find admirers among those who frequent both concert halls and theaters. Thanks for considering the audience!
